Soochow University (苏州大学) was founded in 1900 and is now comprised of 18 schools covering the basic sciences, economics, humanities, and medicine. After the Chinese Civil War, the university was split in 1949 into two campuses, Dongwu University in Taipei, Taiwan, and Soochow University in Suzhou, the Mainland China.
Over the recent years, Soochow University merged a couple of times with other higher learning institutions, including Southern Jiangsu College of Culture and Education, Department of Mathematics and Physics of Jiangnan University, Suzhou College of Sericulture, Suzhou Institute of Silk Textile Technology, Suzhou Medical College, and Jiangsu Teacher’s College.
The university occupies nearly 90 hectares and includes totally 28 schools and departments. There are approximately 200 programs for its undergraduate and graduate students with more than 4,000 faculty members including 1,100 professorships. The university has expanded its cooperation programs with more than one hundred international institutions and annual enrolment of international students has reached a thousand in numerous fields.
The university celebrated its 105th anniversary in 2005. In the published Chinese University Ranking 2003-5, compiled by netbig.com, this university was ranked 48th on the list amid 686 selected Chinese universities. More.. |
