With a history of 700 years, Xiyuan Temple (Guiyuan Temple, Xiyuan Garden) was erected in the later time of Yuan Dynasty and was destroyed during the Qing Dynasty. Most of its structures were reconstructed in the period of Emperors Tongzhi and Guangxu near the end of the Qing Dynasty.

The temple occupies an area of about one hectare and is best known for its styles, in which the designers combined the features of temples with the landscapes of gardens. While walking in its garden, you might not realize the existence of the temple. One of the most attractive sites of the temple is the so-called Life-Releasing Pond, which encourages anyone to free his or her captured aquatic animals. It was said that turtles in the pool have been “released” for 300-400 years.

The temple serves as a Buddhist monastery and attracts fellows around the country.
