Lying in the Town of Fengqiao (Maple Bridge Township), Hanshan Temple (Han Shan Temple, Cold Mountain Temple) was initially erected in Liang Dynasty (502-557). Two famed Buddhist monks, Han Shan and Shi De, once lived in the temple and as a result the name was given later in memory of Monk Han Shan. The two monks were well recognized as poets and writers in the Chinese history. There was a legend about Han Shan and Shi, the master and the apprentice respectively, popular for generations.
The temple gained more fame after a poem, A Night Mooring near Maple Bridge, from Zhang Ji, a poet from the Tang Dynasty, became popular. The poem described the vivid scene in which the midnight bell rings in Han Shan Temple while the boat guests approach the shore.
The temple was listed as a prestigious Buddhism temple in 1980 and was opened to the public. In addition to being a Buddhism shrine, Hanshan Temple is also a tourist attraction and has a remarkable collection of historical relics including calligraphy, painting, and sculpture. |
